Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
