In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
