Our planet is under strain, however a sense of hope remains. A fresh honor originating at the science, music and arts festival Starmus seeks to encourage people to make a difference.

This new Earth medal bearing Jane Goodall's name is to be awarded in honour of the esteemed scientist and conservationist who died recently. It will recognise individuals and groups that protect life on Earth.

The Medal's Framework

Initial honorees will be revealed during the Starmus VIII festival in the Canary Islands, scheduled from 17–22 October next year.

It was shared that Jane Goodall, a former Starmus advisory board member, had backed the award’s creation. “The idea behind this award, and the festival being tasked to oversee it, is Jane’s,” a statement said. “Her desire was that she wanted this to happen. This is likely because of the very special connection she shared with the festival.”

“This medal will recognize sustainable programmes undertaken to create a planet a better place for people, animals and the environment and provide encouragement for the continuation such efforts,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of Starmus indicated that the medal – which was announced at a prestigious venue – would probably have multiple categories.

“It’s going to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach established exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Goodall was a recipient of that very medal.

Expressing concern about the future for Earth, a prominent voice said, “Frankly, it is difficult to be optimistic. Present governance globally represents a war on science. This situation really cripples collective action.”

“In truth, the situation appears very good therefore we must begin to reflecting, with greater urgency about the consequences of our actions. This concern encompasses not just climate change, but also the entire manner in which we interact with the natural world.”

Therefore, observers believe this is an opportune moment to emulate her guiding principles. “It is believed that when we’re awarding the prize, the focus will be on this core philosophy that Jane embodied – which made her foremost concern, to change the way we treat wildlife around us.”

A pressing concern at present involves the spread of false information. The central topic of the upcoming festival is set as “the search for truth”.

“It has become apparent that truth is becoming contested when politics are involved. And it’s a very dangerous thing,” it was said. “The climate science is a science; it is impossible to allow interference from politics in climate science.”

Hope and Determination

The aspiration is that this honor will inspire action. “It’s about encouraging people to participate and to show concern and to strive in that direction, really. Regardless of if we feel hopeful, we have to look at doing our utmost,” it was added. “Be prepared for failure, yet we must have to work toward success.”

A family member engaged in environmental protection expressed confidence that “with guidance and when empowered, people are capable of being diligent stewards of our planet”, citing the programs of a foundation which, in addition to its projects, helps the youth become engaged locally, animals, and the natural world.
