On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his term.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
