Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
